Rationale for making an Online Picture Book.
It is difficult to learn to read, especially for children whose native language is not English or whose parents perhaps speak English but cannot read or write it. Most people are unable to remember how they first discovered reading further compounding the difficulties involved in assisting children to acquire these skills.
Multimodal technologies are an integral part of modern living to which children are exposed from the day they are born. Because of this, early childhood teachers need to develop and create new electronic literacies that combine pictures, audio and text in a visually stimulating way (Hill & Broadhurst 2000).
The internet can store information which may otherwise become corrupted or inaccessible in a Personal Computer. Internet servers consist of many computers, or hard drives, which can pass around information much as a basketball team pass around a ball. If one hard drive breaks down, another will hold a copy of the information, so that it is never lost. This is known as the ‘clouds’ of the internet (Barr & Barnes 2008).There are practical and economic reasons to use Internet Technology. The Australian government, in the search for an alternative to the expense of print production and water usage, finance and encourage computer literacy in order to ensure economic success in an increasingly competitive global market (Hill & Broadhurst 2000).
Many studies have recorded the techno-literacy practices of High school age students (Marsh 2004) who can use their technological literacy to increase their knowledge of other essential literacies (Smolin & Lawless 2003). Most are fully conversant with many forms of Multi Media in their day to day living and have no shortage of ideas that could be used in the creation of electronic picture books for younger children.
Some Multimedia technologies include, movie-making, using a mobile phone or video camera, using a camera, scanning images and uploading them to computer and downloading images or animated graphics to and from the Internet. Students can make a PowerPoint Presentation, use a Movie Maker program and record voice, music or sounds.
